Chapter Twenty-One

January, six months later.

Washington D.C. had become a snow queen's paradise as winter was in full bite. The rain and the minus temperatures were causing havoc by laying ice over every surface; with snow forecast that coming evening it would hide the ice and make the asphalt and sidewalks extremely treacherous. The wind was like tiny shards of glass on your skin and if anyone could help it they would try to remain inside for as long as possible.

Marty's Cafe was crammed with civilians trying to re-heat themselves as Rachel and Hughes attended their usual meeting. The rendezvous had become less frequent due to one reason or another, but today Rachel was glad to be here with him.

A waitress placed their usual breakfast in front of them as Hughes took a sip of his coffee and watched Rachel over the rim. 'So how has it been since I saw you a few weeks ago?' he asked.

'Yeah, everything is going well. Flynn and I are great — he took me to New York on New Year's Eve because I was given New Year's Day off and we had a lovely time. How was everyone else's New Year?' she asked, before tucking into bacon.

He took a bite of toast and watched her for a moment. She seemed different somehow. He could sense she was avoiding something. 'It was fine, my wife and I had the kids and grandkids stay with us for the week and Brody went back to Florida to spend it with his mom, dad and grandfather at his grandfather's condo. Miller had his family over from California and Holly went to visit her sister.'

'Sounds like you all had a wonderful time too.' She shovelled in more food.

'You will be interested to know that Britney Hill's ex-boyfriend has admitted to killing her. Your incident report that was passed on to the police would suggest it was the same guy who was harassing her at the club, so it would appear Karrelli wasn't involved — at least not to our knowledge.'

Rachel sat back in her seat and took a sip of her drink. 'Wow, I guess that's a relief.' She leaned forward and took another mouthful of her toast.

His eyes narrowed slightly. 'What's been happening at the club?' he asked cautiously, feeling slightly unnerved by her uninterested reaction to Britney's killing.

'Jeez, straight down to business already?' she said, muffling around her food.

'Sorry, I just have a feeling you have something to tell me but you're not talking.' He brought his coffee to his lips and watched her over the rim again.

She chewed the rest of her food and wiped her mouth with a napkin. 'I do have something to report.' But she took a mouthful of her coffee first. 'I've been offered a promotion.'

Hughes raised his eyebrows in surprise. 'Doing what exactly?'

'Well, Louise, my manager, hit some ice on the road last week and her car came off the road. She's still in hospital in a bad way and Liam has offered me her job.
